To change the language in GTA 6, change your console's system language and restart the game. On PS5 that's Settings, System, Language, System Language. On Xbox Series X|S it's Settings, System, Language and location. Rockstar hasn't published GTA 6's own settings menu yet, but this is exactly how GTA V works on both consoles, according to Rockstar Support.
One condition matters more than the menu path: the language you pick has to be one of the 13 GTA 6 supports, and it only changes menus and subtitles. Every line of dialogue is spoken in English, whatever you choose. Below are the steps for each console, the full list, and the three reasons a language can fail to appear.
The essentials Release: November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Preload opens November 12, per Rockstar's store page. How to switch: change the console's system language, then restart the game. What changes: menus, HUD and subtitles. Spoken dialogue stays English. Not confirmed yet: whether GTA 6 adds its own in-game language option. We'll update this page on November 19.
How to change the language in GTA 6 on PS5
- Close GTA 6 completely. Press the PS button, highlight the game card and choose Close Game.
- Open Settings (the gear icon, top right of the home screen).
- Go to System, then Language, then System Language.
- Pick the language you want for menus and subtitles.
- Start GTA 6 again. Your save is untouched; only the text changes.
The whole PS5 interface switches too, so the menu labels you need to find your way back will be in the new language. Remember the position of the gear icon and the order System, Language, and you can undo it in any language.
How to change the language in GTA 6 on Xbox Series X|S
- Quit the game: press the Xbox button, highlight GTA 6, press the Menu button and choose Quit.
- Open Settings, then System, then Language and location.
- Choose your language. If it's missing from the list, check the Location setting on the same screen, since Xbox can filter display languages by region.
- Restart the console if it asks you to, then launch GTA 6.
That's it for both consoles. No PC version has been announced, so there's no launcher setting to cover yet.
Which languages can you switch GTA 6 to?
Thirteen, as listed on Rockstar's store page and confirmed by Take-Two on its September 17 shareholder call, reported by GTA Boom. Spanish counts twice, as two separate versions.
| Language | Menus and subtitles | Spoken dialogue |
|---|---|---|
| English | Yes | Yes |
| French | Yes | No |
| Italian | Yes | No |
| German | Yes | No |
| Spanish (Spain) | Yes | No |
| Spanish (Mexico) | Yes | No |
| Portuguese (Brazil) | Yes | No |
| Polish | Yes | No |
| Russian | Yes | No |
| Japanese | Yes | No |
| Korean | Yes | No |
| Chinese (Simplified) | Yes | No |
| Chinese (Traditional) | Yes | No |
The "No" column is the part people miss. Spanish outlet Vandal confirmed from the store listings that audio is English only, the same as every mainline GTA before it. We cover the why, and what that means for each language, in GTA 6 languages: subtitles and voices.
Why your language might not show up
You changed the console language, restarted, and the game is still in English. Three things cause that.
Your language isn't one of the 13
Turkish, Arabic, Hindi, Indonesian and Czech players have all been asking, and none of those is on the launch list. When the console is set to an unsupported language, the game falls back to English. Rockstar has added languages to older games after launch, but it hasn't announced any for GTA 6.
Your regional edition may carry fewer languages
This one's worth checking before you buy. GTA V's Asian PlayStation edition, for example, is listed with four languages: Simplified Chinese, English, Korean and Traditional Chinese. Rockstar has not confirmed whether every regional edition of GTA 6 includes all 13. Read the language line on your local store page, especially if you're importing a copy.
The game wasn't fully closed
Resuming from rest mode keeps the old language loaded. Close it properly and start it again.
Turning subtitles on or off
Changing the language and turning subtitles on are two different settings. In GTA V, the subtitle toggle sits in the pause menu under Settings, then Display. Rockstar usually keeps its menus consistent between games, so look there first, but treat it as unconfirmed until the game is out.
Turning them off is worth it in one situation: when you want to train your ear.
Play with English subtitles on purpose
If English isn't your first language, GTA 6 is about 50 hours of native American speech, slang included. Two settings turn that into practice. Story missions in your own language, so you never lose the plot. Then, once you're hooked, switch the console to English and keep subtitles on, so you read and hear the same words at once. That's the fastest way to connect how English is spelled with how people actually say it.
There's one gap the language setting never closes. Billboards, shop fronts, phone screens and graffiti are painted into the world, so they usually stay in English whatever you pick. That's a job for a camera translator: point your iPhone at the TV and the text on screen turns into your language in place. It also works on a capture, if you've set the PlayStation App or Xbox app to send your screenshots to your phone.
The same camera covers games that never got your language at all. We walk through that for Japanese releases in how to translate Japanese games to English. Reading in Japanese? Our GTA6 日本語字幕ガイド covers the same ground for Japanese players.
